4 Animals with Sleep Apnea

Facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestmail

In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight, but could the lion—or any animal for that matter—possibly suffer from sleep apnea?

The difference between us and our other animals is that we are the only species that spends most of our time sleeping on our backs, which means we are more susceptible to the sleep apnea. While research has shown that dogs might just be one of the only known species with the sleep disorder, there is still a possibility that other animals do suffer from sleep apnea.

Here are some animals that would make pretty good candidates for having sleep apnea.

1. Bulldog

There is only one breed of dog that is known to suffer from sleep apnea—the bulldog, or what is most commonly known as the English Bulldog. With a short snout, underbite, and loud, rumbling snoring when they sleep – and plenty of snorting when they are awake – bulldogs seem custom made for the sleep disorder.

The Inventor of CPAP, Colin Sullivan, actually studied disordered breathing in dogs. You can thank all those snoring pups for contributing to sleep apnea research. CPAP has come a long way since then, and since it’s essential to maintaining your health, many insurance providers will cover your sleep therapy.

2. Walrus

At almost 4,000 pounds, walruses are one of the biggest flippered marine mammals. They spend most of their time switching between water and land, which has given them an advanced respiratory mechanism that allows them to breathe in water for a long time.

However, one study suggests that they might suffer from brief apneas while sleeping on land. If we were to recommend a CPAP for a walrus, it would be ResMed’s AirSense 10 AutoSet. In addition to its whisper-quiet technology, the AirSense:

  • Auto-titration: smart algorithm automatically adjusts your pressure
  • Advanced comfort features: 7 levels of humidity and an optional heated tube ensures you don’t dry out
  • Smaller and lighter: weighs only 2.75 lbs

3. Elephant

They are the largest land mammals on the planet and sleep standing up, often while snoring—could elephants suffer from sleep apnea? Elephants have one of the strangest respiratory tracks with their elongated trunks, and can even get respiratory infections just like people.

That’s why they’d want a Sleep8 CPAP Cleaner to help keep their CPAP germ-free and prevent respiratory infections! The Sleep8 is a portable cleaner with features such as:

  • Ozone technology: Kills over 99% of harmful viruses
  • One-click cleaning: Just press a button and let the Sleep8 do the rest

4. Orangutan

Could orangutans also have sleep apnea (sleep ape-nea?), like their human counterparts? In addition to similar builds and activity habits, orangutans also have some of the same sleep patterns as humans do. It could very well be that they also suffer from a sleep disorder!

Since our customers love the Brevida CPAP Mask so much, we’re confident orangutans would love it too. Its lightweight design is perfect for the orangutan’s lifestyle in the trees.
