A noise coming from your CPAP is unsettling and distressing. Is it a banging? A whirring? What’s the problem that’s causing this unusual sound from an otherwise consistent device? Well there are a few different causes for an unexpected noise from your CPAP, and we break down the most most common ones for you here.
Here are possible reasons why your CPAP is being noisy.
1. Your CPAP motor is wearing out.
With hours of use every night, the motor in your CPAP will eventually degrade and can start to make grinding, clicking, or whirring noises. It’s best to consider replacing your machine every 3-5 years, but if you’re already hearing noises from inside the machine, the motor is likely on its last legs.
If it’s time to upgrade, we recommend the AirSense 11, with features such as:
- Auto-titration: smart algorithm automatically adjusts your pressure
- Advanced comfort features: 7 levels of humidity
- Smaller and lighter: weighs only 2.75 lbs

2. Water is building up in your CPAP tube.
Rainout is something that only occurs when CPAP users have a humidifier attached to their CPAP machine. When the temperature of the room is colder than the temperature of the humidified air traveling through your CPAP tube, water condensation builds up on the sides of the tube. The water will then drip onto the user as it exits the tube. The droplets bouncing around in the tube can cause a lot of noise as well—sometimes sounding like a tapping or even a banging sound.
The best solution for rainout is using a CPAP machine with customizable humidification settings and a heated tube, which work together to prevent moisture buildup.

3. You haven’t replaced your supplies in a while.
Other sounds from your machine are less immediate but persistently troublesome. Small whistles, gasping air pockets, and unusual vibration sounds can all come from worn out supplies. Whether it’s the tube ends stretching out, the water chamber cracking under the heat, or just a chipped mask frame, old supplies can keep you from quality asleep.
Replacing your CPAP supplies regularly is an important part of your therapy. It is necessary for hygiene, ensuring everything works efficiently, and fixing those pesky noise problems. Consider replacing your CPAP supplies if it’s been a while and you haven’t been getting the quality sleep you deserve.
