4 Things Every CPAP User Should Know | Part 2

CPAP machines and supplies can seem pretty straightforward—you put on a mask to breathe better at night. However, taking care of your equipment can be a bit more involved than you might realize. From standard care of your supplies to difficult situations like needing a new CPAP without warning, we want to help you understand how to get the most out of your sleep therapy.

Below are some more of our major tips for being a CPAP user.

1. Payment plans are an option (with 0% interest!).

Replacing your CPAP machine can feel quite daunting. It can seem like you have to stick with your old one, but you don’t!

If it’s time to upgrade your CPAP, we have payment plans available, which are interest-free and don’t require a credit check! Our most popular CPAP is ResMed’s AirSense 11:

  • Auto-titration: Smart algorithm automatically adjusts your therapy pressure as your needs change
  • Humidification: 7 levels of humidity and an optional heated tube ensures you don’t dry out
  • EPR: Expiratory Pressure Relief reduces pressure upon exhale, avoiding high pressure mask leaks

2. More than just your mask needs replacing.

When your mask wears out and the seal begins to weaken, it’s easy to tell what needs replacing. You hear the leaks at night and feel the seal on your face begin to fail. But what about your other supplies? It’s good to know that…

  • Filters need to be changed every 2 weeks. If your CPAP has a secondary foam or pollen filter, it needs to be washed every time you change the disposable one and also get replaced after 6 months.
  • Tubes should be replaced as often as your mask, or you might end up with tiny holes in it.
  • Water chambers need replacing twice a year to avoid leaks and damage from hairline cracks that can form over time.

3. Your CPAP needs to be cleaned a lot.

It is very easy for bacteria and mold to grow in the moist CPAP environment. In a report from the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, bacteria were recovered in 9 of 11 tests from the breathing tubes of CPAPs with humidifiers. Cleaning your supplies is important for staying healthy. We recommend the Lumin cleaner, which features:

  • Simple and Quick: Lumin kills 99% of bacteria in a one-touch 5 minute cycle
  • UV Technology: specialized UV-C light source targets harmful bacteria, viruses, mold, and fungus
  • Complete compatibility: No adapter needed
