Can GLP-1s Reduce Sleep Apnea?
GLP-1s have generated significant buzz for their efficacy in managing weight loss. Emerging research suggests that these medications can also play a role in mitigating sleep apnea symptoms. Eli Lilly, the manufacturer of Zepbound, released preliminary findings on the effect of their drug on sleep apnea patients.
Eli Lilly Study Findings
Lilly’s study focused on two international groups consisting of approximately 230 participants, mostly male. Each participant received injections of Zepbound at doses ranging from 10 to 15 mg over a year. The results showed:
- The first group took Zepbound without CPAP and experienced a 55% decrease in their apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) scores, equivalent to 27 fewer AHI events per hour.1
- The second group took Zepbound while using CPAP and experienced a 63% decrease in their apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) scores, equivalent to 30.4 fewer AHI events per hour.1
- Both groups experienced an almost 20% reduction in their body weight.1
Lilly plans to reveal their full study later this summer. However, their findings support the combination of GLP-1s and CPAP therapy as a promising approach for managing sleep apnea.
Implications for CPAP Users
While GLP-1s like Zepbound show potential in mitigating sleep apnea symptoms through weight loss and metabolic improvements, Lilly’s study shows how using GLP-1s in conjunction with CPAP is more effective than just using GLP-1s alone.
