5 Ways to Make CPAP Quieter

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestmail

Picture this: you have your trusty CPAP that you use every day, relying on it to give you the sleep you deserve. There’s just one problem… your CPAP is way too loud and noisy, keeping you and your bed partner awake throughout the night. Although this may seem like a horror story, this is the case for many CPAP users nationwide.

But, have no fear, we have 5 tips that you can use to make your CPAP therapy much quieter, improving the comfort and quality of your sleep moving forward.

1. Make sure you are regularly replacing your supplies.

When your supplies wear out (which will happen over time with use), the seals your mask, hose, and chamber form become loose and insecure. It’s important to replace your supplies regularly to keep strong, quiet seals.

Full face cushions are recommended for replacement every month, and nasal options (both cushion and pillows) require changing every 2 weeks. Luckily, this is also the same schedule that most insurance providers are willing to cover replacement supplies. Using insurance for your CPAP supplies is convenient not just because it saves you money, but also because it helps you adhere to a replacement schedule.

2. Upgrade your CPAP

One of the most common reasons for a noisy CPAP experience is using an older machine! A lot of people don’t realize quite how far CPAP technology has advanced in recent years. In addition to whisper-quiet technology, the newest machines feature:

  • Auto-titration: automatically adjusts the pressure level to fit your unique needs
  • AutoRamp: allows the machine to slowly ramp up to the pressure you need, making it easier than ever to fall asleep while using your CPAP
  • Expiratory Pressure Relief (EPR): lightens the pressure upon exhale

3. Replace your Mask and Cushion

Although it seems like you can continue using the same CPAP mask until the end of time (and trust me, that’s what I used to think, too), you actually need to replace your mask and cushion on a regular basis to keep it from leaking and making noise.

If you wait too long to replace your mask, the cushion won’t maintain the seal as well (just from normal wear and tear), and you’ll end up with loud leaks. As a result, your sleep will suffer since you won’t be getting adequate therapy.

For that reason, we typically recommend that you replace your mask every 3 months and replace your cushion monthly.

4. Clean Your Supplies Regularly

If you’re anything like me, you probably hate taking the time to clean your CPAP supplies on a daily basis, but it’s actually a necessary part of owning a CPAP. When you don’t clean your supplies, dust and facial oils will build up on your mask, making it more likely that you will experience leaks and not get the pressure you need. So, my recommendation is to invest in a CPAP cleaner and, in particular, the Lumin CPAP Cleaner features:

  • Simple and quick: One-touch 5 minute cycle
  • UV technology: specialized UV-C light source targets harmful bacteria, viruses, mold, and fungus
  • Complete compatibility: No adapter needed

5. Use Mask Liners

Another recommendation to prevent leaks and excess noise coming from CPAP masks is to use mask liners. A mask liner is a soft cloth liner that provides a barrier between the mask and your skin. In doing this, the mask liner actually helps maintain the seal of your mask cushion. Other features include:

  • Minimize pressure marks: Don’t worry about those annoying red marks anymore
  • Absorb moisture and facial oils: Absorbs moisture and helps your mask last longer
  • For all types of masks: Mask liners are specific to brand and type of mask
