Dry Mouth | Common CPAP Problems & Solutions

Dryness and discomfort associated with dry mouth are some of the most common issues for CPAP users. That’s not surprising, considering the CPAP machine is blowing air straight into the user’s nasal and oral passageways. Dry mouth can lead to congestion and soreness, and often leads many people with sleep apnea to resist treatment.

Don’t worry—we have a number of solutions to help you deal with dry mouth.

1. Use a CPAP with heated humidification.

Waking up with dry mouth is a common experience for some CPAP users because their machines aren’t able to provide the humidity they need. The best solution to this is upgrading to an auto CPAP. An auto CPAP will automatically titrate, or adjust, the pressure, but it will also automatically regulate the humidity to keep you from drying out during the night.

These machines are programmed with a sophisticated algorithm that monitors your breathing in order to determine the most comfortable and effective settings for you at any given moment. The constant adjustments of the auto CPAP are essential to ensure that you continue to get the most out of your CPAP therapy.

2. Upgrade to a CPAP with advanced comfort settings.

If you can’t adjust certain comfort settings on your CPAP, your dry mouth will be left untreated. Having the right pressure and comfort settings means your humidifier can accomplish more with less effort. The ResMed AirSense 11 AutoSet has all of these features to make breathing easy.

  • Humidification: Auto Climate Control setting regulates humidity and temperature to match your needs and environment
  • EPR: Expiratory Pressure Relief reduces the pressure when you exhale, avoiding high pressure mask leaks
  • AutoRamp: Starts your sleep therapy at a low pressure to ensure you fall asleep more comfortably

3. Make sure you are using the right mask.

If you’re using a nasal or pillow mask, you may actually need a full face mask instead to fix your dry mouth problem. If your mouth opens up, the CPAP therapy will escape through your mouth instead of going into your airways. This will dry you out faster than your machine can fix, and also means you’re not getting the therapy you need! The best solution is ResMed’s most minimal full face mask, the AirFit F30.

  • Under-the-nose full face cushion: Reduces red marks and irritation on the nasal bridge
  • QuietAir technology: Makes for a quieter experience for you and your bed partner
  • Quick-release elbow and universal headgear: Makes taking your mask on and off easier than ever

4. Replace your supplies.

Your worn out supplies could be the root of your dry mouth problems. If your machine’s humidifier or tubing are wearing out, the comfort settings of your CPAP won’t function as well as they should. This can lead to dryness all over, including your mouth.

Both the aging supplies and under-performing comfort settings can affect how well you sleep, and dry mouth on top of that can contribute to poor sleep. Fresh supplies combined with a newer CPAP that has advanced comfort settings will make your dry mouth a thing of the past! It’s best to replace your supplies regularly, but not to worry, insurance covers regular supply replacements.
