How CPAP is linked to Heart Disease
A new study by Jennifer Albrecht, an associate professor of epidemiology and public health at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, suggests that individuals diagnosed with heart disease could benefit from an evaluation for sleep apnea. Continue reading to find out the results from this study and what you should know about the correlation between sleep apnea and heart disease.
In this study, researchers looked at 1,301 Medicare recipients who had heart disease, were newly diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea (between 2009 and 2013), had initiated CPAP, and were recently hospitalized.
1. Are you ready to return to your CPAP therapy?
In her study, Albrecht states, “Our data show that successful treatment of obstructive sleep apnea can greatly reduce the risk of 30-day hospital readmission.” The overall 30-day readmission rate over a two-year period after the recipients started CPAP was 10.2%. This includes individuals with different adherence to their CPAP, with 33% of the study sample having low adherence, 38% having partial adherence, and about 28.5% had high adherence.

So what does this information mean for CPAP users with heart disease? This information means Albrecht’s team found that individuals with high adherence were 60% less likely to be readmitted to the hospital within 30 days. With an estimated 30 million adults having sleep apnea and about 90% of individuals with sleep apnea being undiagnosed, knowing the signs of sleep apnea and benefits of CPAP therapy could improve both quality of life and save on repeated hospital visits.

“If patients show signs of obstructive sleep apnea, such as snoring, daytime sleepiness or poor sleep quality, they should talk to their doctor, and doctors should ask about sleep, especially when caring for older adult patients with cardiovascular disease,” Albrecht warns. “Older adults with co-morbid cardiovascular disease and obstructive sleep apnea are a vulnerable population at high risk for hospital readmission.”
